Needs Statement
Each year the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center serves the needs of pediatricians, family practitioners, general and pediatric surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, primary care, emergency and pediatric nurses, pediatric, family medicine and emergency medicine residents, and public health system professionals across the Commonwealth of Kentucky by recognizing the need for high quality life-long learning for inter-professional healthcare professionals through continuing education.
In the spirit of building patient-focused relationships, it is intended that participants receive the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and practical medical information available on a variety of important patient-related topics, the end result being that the knowledge gained by attendance at the conference will improve the health and lives of children throughout Kentucky and surrounding areas.
Educational needs and practice gaps were identified through a comprehensive paper-based needs assessment and evaluation completed by attendees at the previous year’s meeting, input from the medical staff, and guidance from the planning committee. Some talks were prompted by recent publications, in both medical and mainstream media, focusing on certain healthcare pediatric issues. Results of the needs assessments were then assimilated and prioritized by an organizing committee appointed by the chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Kentucky in order to set this year’s agenda. This year’s conference focuses on the up-to-date management of conditions practitioners encounter during every-day practice.
The conference begins with a reception and presentations that focus on the issues of apparent life-threatening events and hypertension.
Dr. Mark Plunkett, newly appointed Director of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, will discuss the diagnosis and management of congenital heart disease. Conference attendees will gain national perspectives on the comprehensive interactions involved in the management of asthma, teen sexual practices, and the management of sports injuries. Recent advances in pediatric neurosurgery will be addressed. Attendees will also gain new insights into the fields of international adoptions and pediatric psychiatric issues, and learn ways to improve the survival of pediatric patients with sepsis.
The concurrent workshops offer a unique program. A toxicology workshop will enhance the understanding of common pediatric ingestions. The other sessions include a breastfeeding workshop, management of the pediatric patient with diabetes, and a conversation about the role of nurse practitioners in pediatric care.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Craig Martin, Infectious Diseases Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at UK HealthCare. Dr. Martin serves as the clinical pharmacist for UK Hospital’s Antimicrobial Management Team. The AMT provides patients at the UK Chandler Medical Center with appropriate, cost-effective antimicrobial therapy through formulary management and patient-specific interventions. The Antimicrobial Management Program has been successful in reducing both resistance rates and expenditures on antimicrobial agents. His talk will address the continuing impact of MRSA infections in our communities.
Plan today to join us in Lexington as we work together to improve patient care.
