Signature Events

Through the years, the University of Kentucky has offered hundreds - perhaps even thousands - of continuing education activities to health care professionals across the country. Many of these were "one-and-done" offerings but a select few have endured from one year to the next. We call these our "Signature Events" and, once you've attended them, we think you will understand why.

Family Medicine Review

FMR, as it is commonly known, is the oldest and one of the best attended Family Medicine courses in the nation. The six-day course will provide current information on a variety of topics. The focus will be updating knowledge of current advances in medicine to improve the quality of care provided in practice. It is open to family practitioners, general practitioners, internists, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Three sessions are offered each academic year - session I occurs in the Fall, usually late October/early November; session II is in February; and session III in May. The course is held at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Lexington, Kentucky.

Advances in Pharmacy Practice Annual Fall Conference

Each fall the College of Pharmacy provides a conference that offers at least fifteen hours of ACPE credit for practicing pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Some of the topics including New Drugs/Indications Review and a Pharmacy Law Update are repeated each year because new developments affect the pharmacist's practice. Pharmacists in the community and hospital settings are continually trying to develop new services to assist patients in maximizing their medication care. To assist Kentucky pharmacists in this effort, a four-hour segment of the program provides an overview of opportunities for new services and how to receive compensation. Programs addressed may include diabetes, smoking cessation, anticoagulation, and health/wellness promotions and involves pharmacy practitioners who are providing these services. Each year the conference also provides disease state/risk factor updates and programming that will help pharmacists address their patient needs.

Prescription Compounding and Pharmacy Law Review

This annual review course helps prepare candidates for the Kentucky Board exam. Upon completion, participants will be able to comply with statutes and regulations pertinent to pharmacy practice in Kentucky, accurately calculate the amounts of ingredients needed to fill and compound prescriptions, and discuss appropriate techniques for compounding prescriptions. This program offers 5.8 hours of ACPE credit.

Kentucky Pharmacy Law

This annual continuing education program provides practicing pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with an opportunity to obtain new information pertinent to the legal and regulatory issues that affect pharmacy practice. Changes in both state and federal laws occur as well as the issuance of regulations to implement these laws. It is important that pharmacists are updated and have specific issues about implementation within the practice addressed. The program offers 6.6 hours of ACPE credit.

Contemporary Pediatrics for the Health Care Professional

This conference is designed for pediatricians, family practitioners, general and pediatric surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, pediatric and emergency medicine nurses, pediatric, surgery, and emergency medicine residents, family medicine and emergency medicine physicians, and public health system professionals. The interdisciplinary approach to medical and surgical problems in the pediatric population is featured. This educational activity is accredited for a maximum of 12.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. This activity is approved for a maximum of 14.7 KBN (50 minute) contact hours and 12.2 ANCC (60 minute) contact hours for nurses who attend all sessions.

What's Next in Clinical Cardiology?

"What's Next in Clinical Cardiology" is a state-wide American College of Cardiology meeting. It has been designed to offer a combination of high-caliber scientific content for continuing education along with ample opportunities for networking. As this is the only meeting held in which all cardiologists throughout the state of Kentucky and the surrounding areas are invited, we anticipate that this unique meeting will attract a large audience.

Pharmacy Live

With the ever-changing practice of pharmacy, the Continuing Education Office offers pharmacists and technicians an annual live opportunity in their community to stay abreast of recent legal issues affecting the pharmacy profession and an update on new pharmaceuticals and associated therapies. Pharmacy Live is offered in 8 locations throughout Kentucky and includes an update on Current Pharmacy Practice Issues from the Dean of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. This activity offers four hours of ACPE credit.
